What are Listening Therapies?
Listening therapies are gentle, evidence-based sound interventions that support nervous system regulation, emotional processing, and overall well-being. At The Sound Mind Life, we offer two integrative auditory tools: the Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP) and the Rest & Restore Protocol (RRP). Both are rooted in neuroscience and grounded in Polyvagal Theory, developed by Dr. Stephen Porges.
These therapies use filtered sound or infrasound to support your body’s natural ability to return to a calm, connected state, improving emotional resilience, internal awareness, and stress recovery. Whether you’re feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or disconnected from your body, these modalities offer a pathway back to safety and restoration. Delivered in person or remotely, listening therapies are ideal for anyone seeking to deepen their healing journey through non-invasive, somatic support.
What We Offer
Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP)
SSP is a gentle, science-backed method to help your body feel calm, safe, and more connected. You’ll listen to specially filtered music that helps quiet your stress response and restore a sense of ease. It’s simple to use, flexible with your schedule, and done from the comfort of home.

How SSP & RRP Work
Our nervous system is designed to protect us, often reacting to stress or trauma with fight, flight, or freeze responses. But when these systems stay activated long after the threat has passed, it can lead to chronic tension, anxiety, or emotional disconnection.
Listening therapies like the Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP) and the Rest and Restore Protocol (RRP) use specially engineered sound and music to gently support nervous system regulation. By stimulating areas of the brain connected to safety and rhythm, these tools help shift the body out of survival mode and into a state of calm, connection, and healing. Delivered through headphones in the comfort of your home, these evidence-based interventions are non-invasive, easy to use, and powerfully effective.
Polyvagal Theory: The Science of Feeling Safe
Polyvagal Theory, developed by Dr. Stephen Porges, explains how our autonomic nervous system detects safety and threat, shaping how we feel, think, and respond to the world around us. This theory offers a powerful framework for understanding why trauma, stress, and chronic dysregulation can keep us stuck in patterns of anxiety, disconnection, or shutdown. Listening therapies like the Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP) and the Rest & Restore Protocol (RRP) offered by The Sound Mind Life, bring this science into practice. Both use sound to gently shift the nervous system out of survival mode and into a state of safety, calm, and connection, supporting deeper healing from the inside out.
Frequently Asked Questions:
-
SSP and RRP are designed for adults who want to improve nervous system regulation, reduce emotional reactivity, and feel more grounded in everyday life. They are especially helpful for individuals navigating trauma, anxiety, stress-related symptoms, or who are looking for body-based tools to support healing. While SSP is also used with children in other settings, The Sound Mind currently offers both listening therapies to adults only.
-
Listening therapies are not traditional psychotherapy and are not delivered by a therapist. They are self-paced therapeutic tools facilitated by certified providers and can be used on their own or in combination with therapy, coaching, somatic work, or intensives.
-
No. Because these programs are not clinical services and require private app access, they are not eligible for insurance billing. The Sound Mind offers both listening therapies for an additional fee.
-
Yes. After a personalized onboarding session, you can complete the program at your own pace. Both SSP and RRP are designed to be flexible and completed from home, with support from our team to ensure safe and effective use.
-
Each program is delivered through a secure app and involves listening to specially designed music through over-the-ear headphones. Sessions are completed in short increments over several days or weeks to allow the nervous system time to integrate the effects. You’ll receive personalized guidance, pacing recommendations, and ongoing support from a trained provider.
