What is the Safe and Sound Protocol?

The Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP) is a self-paced, evidence-based listening program designed to support nervous system regulation, emotional resilience, and improved capacity for connection. Through specially filtered music delivered via a secure app, SSP helps you shift out of survival mode and into a state of greater ease—on your own schedule, from the comfort of home.

This offering is available as a standalone experience or as an enhancement to intensives, coaching, or ongoing therapy. It is not covered by insurance and is purchased separately through The Sound Mind.

The Safe & Sound Protocol Benefits

Developed by Dr. Stephen Porges, the founder of Polyvagal Theory, the Safe and Sound Protocol is a 5-hour auditory intervention that uses filtered music to gently stimulate the vagus nerve. This non-invasive intervention supports the nervous system in better processing sensory information, regulating stress, and engaging more fully in relationships and daily life.

At The Sound Mind, SSP is offered as a self-guided program, supported by a certified provider—not as a therapy delivered by our clinical team. It is ideal for those looking to supplement their personal growth work or deepen the effects of other modalities such as EMDR, Brainspotting, or talk therapy. Benefits may include:

  • Reduced sound sensitivities

  • Improved ability to manage stress and anxiety

  • Enhanced capacity for social engagement

  • Greater emotional regulation and behavioral flexibility

  • Support for trauma recovery and nervous system resilience

  • Accelerated outcomes with the help of traditional talk therapy and trauma-informed care

How SSP Works

The SSP is delivered through a secure app and involves listening to filtered music through over-the-ear headphones. Sessions are typically broken into small increments and spread out over several days or weeks, allowing your system to process and integrate at a comfortable pace.

At The Sound Mind, we offer onboarding support and pacing recommendations tailored to your needs. SSP can be done entirely remotely and is guided by a certified provider, ensuring safe and effective use without requiring a therapist or insurance coverage.

Polyvagal Theory: The Science of Feeling Safe

Polyvagal Theory, developed by Dr. Stephen Porges, explains how our nervous system interprets safety and threat in the world around us. It provides a science-based lens for understanding how physiological states impact our thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. SSP is one of the few tools that applies this theory in a practical, body-based way—helping individuals build more resilience, awareness, and capacity for connection from the bottom up.

Frequently Asked Questions:

  • SSP is designed for adults who want to improve nervous system regulation, reduce emotional reactivity, and feel more grounded in daily life. It is especially helpful for individuals navigating trauma, anxiety, overwhelm, or those seeking to enhance their healing through non-traditional, body-based tools. While SSP can be beneficial for children, we currently offer it only to adult clients at The Sound Mind.

  • SSP is not a therapy and is not delivered by a therapist. It’s a self-paced, therapeutic tool facilitated by a certified provider and intended as a stand-alone offering or enhancement to therapy, coaching, or intensives.

  • No. Because SSP requires access to a private platform and is not delivered as a clinical service, it is not billable through insurance. Access is available through The Sound Mind for an additional fee.

  • Yes. After your initial onboarding, you can complete the program independently, following a pacing plan that fits your schedule. We’re here to offer guidance if needed.
